Our Story
Who are we?
The NEC is an independent statutory body established in terms of the Labour Act (Chapter 28:01) and it has been in existence since 1995. It was formed and registered on the 2nd of June in 1995 as the National Employment Council for the Cotton Company of Zimbabwe. As more players joined the Industry, the name was then changed in February 1998 to the National Employment Council of the Cotton Industry.
After its establishment in 1998 by the Cotton Industry Employers Association and the Cotton Marketing Workers Union of Zimbabwe, the broad objective was to advance social justice and democracy in the Industry. The NEC Constitution is the supreme law guiding the operations of the NEC. At the top of the structure is the Council which is headed by the Chairman. The Council has delegated functions to various committees namely; The Executive Committee, Negotiating Committee and Exemptions & Variations Committee. Membership to these committees is based on equal representation of employer and employee party. The Secretariat is responsible for running the business of the Council and is comprised of full-time employees headed by the General Secretary. The Secretariat provides for the office of duly certified Designated Agents who are also conciliators and arbitrators responsible for resolving disputes in the industry. An Accountant is responsible for all financial matters.
